Veteran Gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka Dies at 83 Amid Legal Storm That Shook Nairobi Hospital

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Veteran gynaecologist and The Nairobi Hospital director Dr Job Obwaka died yesterday at the age of 83.
His death at a Nairobi hospital, has brought to a close a distinguished medical career that was in recent weeks overshadowed by a dramatic legal battle.

Family sources indicated that the veteran medic was rushed to hospital after collapsing but was pronounced dead on arrival, ending a lifetime of service in women’s health that spanned more than five decades.

His death comes barely weeks after his arrest over alleged falsification of records linked to the management wrangles at The Nairobi Hospital, a case that had drawn national attention.

Dr Obwaka received his medical training at the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1975 before advancing his studies to earn a Master of Medicine (M.Med) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1983.

Armed with strong academic credentials, he built a reputation as one of Kenya’s respected specialists in maternal and reproductive health.

Over the years, he worked across both private and institutional practice, attending to thousands of patients and mentoring younger doctors in the field.

He also ran a private practice in Nairobi and remained actively engaged in clinical work even in his later years.

His experience and influence in the medical fraternity saw him rise into leadership, eventually becoming a long serving director at The Nairobi Hospital, where he spent decades contributing to its growth and reputation as a premier private health facility.

However, his final days were marked by controversy following his arrest in mid March 2026 alongside other hospital officials.

Detectives accused them of falsifying records related to the hospital’s membership and governance structure, including claims of fraudulent registration and conflict of interest.

He was arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts, where he denied the charges and was released on bond as the case proceeded.

During the court process, Dr Obwaka’s health reportedly deteriorated, with reports indicating that he at one point collapsed and required medical attention, raising concern among colleagues and observers about the strain of the legal proceedings on the elderly doctor.

The case remained unresolved at the time of his death.

Despite the legal troubles, colleagues who talked to DNK-International have described him as a dedicated practitioner whose contributions to Kenya’s health sector, particularly in gynaecology and obstetrics, were immense.

He is remembered for mentoring generations of doctors, advancing specialised care for women, and playing a role in strengthening private healthcare institutions in the country.

Tributes from the medical fraternity and public figures have continued to pour in, with many describing him as a committed and experienced doctor whose legacy will endure beyond the controversy that marked his final days.

His death leaves behind a complex legacy of professional excellence intertwined with a high profile legal dispute, as questions linger over the governance issues at The Nairobi Hospital that ultimately led to his arrest.
