Police in Kieni West, Nyeri County, have arrested a police officer attached to Parliament police and another suspect after fake Kenyan currency notes amounting to Sh409,000 were recovered from a vehicle at Kiawara township.

According to a report recorded at Kiawara Police Station yesterday, the incident was first reported by Jackson Muriithi Maina, a bar owner from Ruiri area, who stated that at around 10.00pm, two men entered his bar and ordered one pack containing six cans of beer.

One of the men allegedly paid using a Sh1,000 note and was refunded Sh470 as balance.

Moments later, the complainant realized the Sh2,000 note was counterfeit.

He attempted to trace the suspects, who had already sped off towards the Nyeri–Nyahururu road.

He proceeded to Kiawara Police Station and handed over the fake currency note as an exhibit.

Police officers were later alerted through a phone call made to Sergeant Joseph Waithaka by a member of the public, Peter Wambugu, who reported that suspected conmen using fake currency notes had been spotted heading towards Kiawara.

The duty officer and officers on patrol launched an operation and intercepted motor vehicle registration number KDD 163R, a silver grey Nissan model, near Fine Breeze Bar and Restaurant in Kiawara Township.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered bundles of suspected fake Sh1,000 notes amounting to Sh409,000 concealed inside a black bag.

The vehicle reportedly had three occupants, but one escaped during the operation.

The two arrested suspects were identified as Police Constable John Gitonga Ndegwa, attached to Parliament Police Station, and Peter Njihia.

The suspects were escorted to Kiawara Police Station and booked for the offence of being in possession of counterfeit Kenyan currency notes.

Police said an inventory of the recovered exhibits was prepared and signed by the suspects, while the vehicle was detained at the station yard pending further investigations.
