At least 12 police officers were injured yesterday after violent demonstrations broke out in Kiambaa, Kiambu County over the rising fuel prices.
According to police, about 1,000 protesters gathered near Westbay Mall in the morning before barricading Redhill Road with bonfires and disrupting traffic.
The demonstrators later advanced towards Riba Rori Police Post while pelting stones at police officers and members of the public.
Police officers from Kihara Police Station, assisted by the Kiambaa Sub-County team, dispersed the rioters after hours of confrontation.
The injured officers among them was Chief Inspector Moses Shikuku,
Other officers were of the rank of Inspector of police and below.
Three government vehicles were damaged during the chaos, several shops looted, and 20 suspects arrested for assaulting police officers and malicious damage to property.
Police said officers remain deployed in the area to maintain law and order as investigations continue.
