Peter’s refusal to let Jesus wash his feet seems like humility, but it was actually a dangerous form of pride. By saying “never,” Peter was unintentionally rejecting the very heart of Christ’s mission. He wanted a King to worship, but he wasn’t ready for a Saviour to serve him in his dirt.
Jesus’ response is a sobering wake-up call: “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.”
Our relationship with God doesn’t start with what we do for Him, but with what we allow Him to do for us. True intimacy requires the vulnerability to admit we are “unclean” and need His touch. If we refuse to let Him handle our mess, we distance ourselves from His presence.
Don’t let “pious pride” keep you at arm’s length from God today. Identify one area of shame or failure you’ve been hiding, and in prayer, invite Jesus to “wash” it.Surrender your need to be perfect and accept His perfect grace instead.
