At least 15 students have died following a devastating fire outbreak at Utumishi Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Gilgil,Nakuru County in the early hours of today.
According to a police report filed at Gilgil Police Station at 4.30 am, the incident was reported by the school principal Joycelene Muraguri.

In her report she indicated that flames engulfed from one of the school dormitories.
Police officers led by the OCPD Gilgil, alongside officers from the DCI rushed to the institution and found the dormitory, identified as the “Meline Waithera Block,” already engulfed in flames.
The affected dormitory housed 220 students comprising Grade 10 learners, Form Three and Form Four students.
A multi-agency emergency response involving fire brigades from Naivasha and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), as well as water bowsers and personnel from the Anti-stock theft unit (ASTU), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and National Youth Service (NYS), managed to contain the inferno after intense efforts.

An unknown number of injured victims sustained varying degrees of burns and other injuries.
The injured were rushed to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital and St. Mark’s Hospital, where they were admitted.
Property of unknown value was extensively destroyed in the blaze.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers from Nakuru processed and documented the scene as investigations into the cause of the fire commenced.

Police said the cause of the fire remains unknown, with detectives from DCI Gilgil taking over investigations.
More updates are expected as authorities continue with rescue operations and identification of victims.
