Students at Sigowet Senior Secondary School in Kiplombe,Turbo,Uasin Gishu County on Thursday staged a protest over a series of welfare related grievances.
The incident forced the school administration to close the institution indefinitely.
According to a police report recorded at Kapyemit Police Post yesterday, the unrest was reported by the school principal Esther Malakwen.
Police officers led by the Officer Commanding Police Post (OCPP) Kapyemit, accompanied by the area assistant chief, the school PTA chairman, parents, and local villagers, visited the school to assess the situation.
Investigations established that after the lunch break on May 28,Form four students refused to return to afternoon classes, citing several grievances including overflowing toilets, the transfer of one of their teachers, lack of a playing field, substandard diet, inadequate food portions, and long learning hours.
Following the protest, the school administration resolved to close the institution indefinitely and directed all students to return home peacefully pending further communication on the reopening date.
Police confirmed that the demonstration ended without any destruction of property or injuries being reported.
