Highway Paralysed as St. Lawrence Egoji College Students Clash With Police

By Our Correspondent,Igoji.

Students at St. Lawrence Egoji Teachers College in Meru County yesterday staged violent demonstrations that disrupted transport along the busy Meru–Chuka–Nairobi Highway as they protested over a range of welfare related grievances.

According to police at Igoji Police Station, the unrest began at around 3:00 p.m. when approximately 1,200 students took to the streets demanding action from the institution’s administration.

The students cited several grievances, including poor medical services, issues within the finance department, inadequate diet, water and sanitation challenges, and what they termed as unlawful suspensions.

They later turned chaotic after the protesters allegedly became rowdy and started pelting police officers with stones.

The students also blocked the highway at Mathiamene-Mbaine Junction and near the college junction, rendering the road temporarily impassable and damaging guard rails in the process.

Police officers led by the OCS Igoji responded to the situation by firing teargas canisters and blank ammunition in an effort to disperse the crowd.

The confrontation reportedly lasted until about 3:30 p.m., when officers managed to restore order.

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were reported during the incident.

The situation eventually calmed after the OCS held talks with student leaders alongside the college principal and assured them that a meeting would be convened on Friday (today) to address the grievances raised.

Security patrols have since been intensified both inside and outside the institution as police continue monitoring the situation.
