Three Barding Boys Students Arrested After Suspected Petrol Cache Recovered in School Security Operation

Three students from Barding Boys Secondary School in Siaya County have been arrested after security officers recovered suspected petrol believed to have been intended for a planned school unrest incident.

According to a report filed at Kogelo Police Station on Monday night, the school’s principal, Paul J. Ouma, alerted authorities following reports that students were in possession of a highly flammable substance within one of the school’s dormitories.

In response, a Siaya Sub-County security team led by Robert Ngetich, accompanied by the Sub-County Director of Education, visited the institution in Barding Sub-location, South Alego Location, to investigate the allegations.

During the operation, students residing in Jupiter Block Dormitory, which accommodates approximately 140 Form Three students, were assembled as officers conducted a thorough search of the premises.

The search led to the recovery of about half a litre of a highly flammable liquid suspected to be petrol. The substance had allegedly been concealed in a two-litre plastic bottle inside a school box belonging to an 18-year-old Form Three student.

Following interrogation, the student reportedly implicated two other learners believed to have been involved in the scheme.

Investigators also established that teachers had earlier recovered another container holding approximately two litres of suspected petrol hidden in an unused classroom within the school compound.

Authorities suspect the fuel may have been intended for use during a planned unrest incident, raising concerns amid increased vigilance in schools following a series of student disturbances reported across the country in recent years.

To ease anxiety among learners and maintain calm within the institution, the Sub-County Director of Education, the school administration, and the security team resolved to release students to return home beginning today.

According to the arrangement, Grade 10 and Form Four students will resume classes on June 8, while Form Three students are expected to report back on June 9.

The three students have been taken into police custody to assist with investigations. Detectives are seeking to establish the source of the fuel, the motive behind its concealment, and whether additional individuals were involved.

Police said investigations are ongoing and that further details will be released as inquiries progress.
