KDF Officer Found Dead in Suspected Suicide at Manda Naval Base

A KDF officer has been found dead in a suspected suicide incident at Kenya Navy Manda Base in Lamu County on Friday evening.

Reports from Hindi Police Station indicated that the matter was reported by Sergeant George Omusungu of the Military Police, who informed police that at around 5:40 p.m., Corporal Cornelius Ndereba, 30, attached to the Army Signal Battalion and on duty at the OAB Headquarters within the base, was found lying dead inside the radio room.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a gunshot was heard at about 3:30 p.m., with officers later discovering the corporal’s body.

Police officers from Hindi Police Station, detectives from the DCI Lamu Central,Scenes of Crime personnel and KDF officers visited the scene.

The deceased was found lying on his back in a pool of blood.

Investigators established that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound while inside the room.

An AK-47 rifle,and one spent cartridge were recovered at the scene.

A search of the deceased’s personal effects led to the recovery of a Defence Savings and Credit Cooperative Society member account variation form.

Investigators also established from colleagues that the officer had reportedly been experiencing domestic challenges involving his former spouse, who is also a Kenya Navy officer, concerning the medical care of their sick child.

No note explaining the circumstances surrounding the death was recovered at the scene.

The scene was processed by forensic officers and the body moved to the Kenya Navy Manda Base mortuary pending airlifting to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital for a post mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing, with DCI officers from Lamu Central handling the case.
