Mob Justice Over Alleged Chicken Theft Leaves One Dead, Another Injured in Kakamega

A 22 year-old man has been killed while another sustained injuries after they were attacked by a mob over claims of stealing two chickens in Kakamega County.

According to a police report filed at Imbiakalo Police Station, the incident occurred on Friday, June 19 at Makale Village in Chevoso Sub-location.

The matter was reported by Chevoso Assistant Chief Tom Shirusi, who informed police that two victims had been rushed to Viena Health Centre in Shamberere Market following a mob attack.

Police officers visited the health facility and found the victims undergoing treatment.

One of them, identified as Brian Mateti, 22, had sustained multiple injuries and later succumbed while receiving treatment.

The second victim, Anthony Shamala, 25, was admitted in stable condition with a head cut and swollen hands.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two were allegedly assaulted by members of the public at around 4:00 a.m. after being accused of stealing two chickens valued at Sh1,600 belonging to a local resident, Oscar Mwanje.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kakamega Orthopedic Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police processed and documented the scene, while detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kakamega North have launched investigations into the incident.
