A police vehicle attached to elite Recce unit carrying seven officers was extensively damaged on Friday morning after it was involved in a hit and run road traffic accident at Samburu,Kwale county along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

According to a police report, the accident occurred in the morning but was reported to Taru Traffic Base a few minutes past 11:00 a.m.

The vehicle involved was a Toyota Land Cruiser attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Recce Tactical Sub-Unit based at Ruiru Camp.

The Land Cruiser was being driven by Corporal Lawrence Mutinda and was travelling from Mombasa towards Nairobi with seven police officers on board.

All the officers escaped unhurt.

Preliminary investigations indicate that upon reaching the accident scene, an unidentified trailer travelling towards Mombasa while overtaking from the opposite direction collided with the front right side of the police vehicle.

The impact forced the Land Cruiser to veer off the road to the left side.

The police vehicle sustained extensive damage on its right front side, while the trailer driver failed to stop and fled towards Mombasa immediately after the collision.

Traffic officers visited the scene and commenced investigations.

The damaged police vehicle was being towed to the station pending inspection as efforts continue to trace the trailer involved in the incident.

Police said the road surface was tarmacked and well-marked at the time of the accident, while weather conditions were drizzling but visibility remained clear.

The case has been recorded and investigations are ongoing.
