DNK International A 35-year-old man has been arrested after he was allegedly caught inside the residence of a High Court judge in Malindi during an attempted burglary.
The suspect is accused of breaking into the judge’s home and preparing several household items for theft before he was apprehended.
According to a police incident report filed at Malindi Police Station, the incident occurred on Friday, June 26, at about 2:30 p.m. at the Sea Breeze residence of High Court Judge Justice Mwangi Njoroge.
The judge’s police escort, Joseph Njoroge, reported that upon arriving home with the judge, they heard unusual noises coming from inside the house.
As they approached the main gate, they spotted a man attempting to flee from the compound. In an effort to stop him, the escort officer fired two warning shots into the air using his Ceska pistol.
The suspect reportedly retreated back into the house, where he was subdued and arrested.
Police identified him as Salim Said Rajab, 35, who told investigators he is a resident of Kisauni, Mombasa County.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect gained entry by breaking the padlock on the rear door of the house. Officers found the residence extensively ransacked, suggesting the intruder may have been searching for specific valuables.
Among the items allegedly gathered for theft were a six-kilogram Total gas cylinder, assorted clothing, household goods and a carpet.
Crime scene investigators documented the scene and recovered the two spent cartridges fired by the escort officer, as well as a crowbar believed to have been used to force entry into the house.
The suspect was taken to Malindi Police Station for processing, while detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Malindi have taken over investigations.
