Two security guards have been arrested following the theft of property worth an estimated US$10,000 (about Sh1.3 million) from two Russian tourists staying at a luxury camp in the Maasai Mara.
According to a police report filed at the Tourist Police Unit Maasai Mara Base, the incident was reported yesterday morning by tour operator Linda Miller, who was leading a group of six Russian tourists at Zebra Valley Camp.
The theft was discovered at around 5:20 a.m. as the tourists were checking out of the camp.
Two guests, identified as Elena Kachura and Riytova Elena, realized that their two suitcases and two rucksacks had disappeared from Room 12A.
The stolen items included two Russian passports, binoculars, two pairs of sunglasses, cosmetics and assorted clothing, with the total value estimated at US$10,000.
Police officers from the Tourist Police Unit, led by the officer in charge, visited the scene and confirmed that the tourists’ tent had been cut to gain access before the theft occurred.
A search of the surrounding area was conducted, but none of the stolen property was recovered.
Investigators have since arrested two security guards attached to the camp, who are being questioned as investigations continue to establish their involvement in the incident.
Police said efforts to recover the stolen property and identify any additional suspects are ongoing.
