A 27 year old woman died after sustaining a gunshot wound during unrest linked to alleged political differences in Marachi area, Busia Sub-County.
According to a police incident report, officers responded to multiple distress calls from members of the public reporting that a group of youths armed with pangas, knives and rungus had barricaded roads, attacked and intimidated residents over political differences in the area.
Police said officers dispersed the group, cleared the barricaded roads and used tear gas to prevent further violence, looting and destruction of property.
Calm was subsequently restored in the area.
Later, police received a report from Busia Maternity and Nursing Home that a woman identified as Laura Ajiambo, 27, had been rushed to the facility with a gunshot wound on the left side of her abdomen.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police officers visited the hospital and confirmed the incident. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers from Busia County processed the scene, while the body was moved to Francis Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The circumstances under which the deceased sustained the gunshot wound remain under investigation.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Busia have launched investigations over the matter.
