A man accused of attempting to rape a 50 year old woman is admitted to hospital after he was attacked by an angry mob that later torched part of his homestead in Koryot Village, Lolminingai Location, Nandi Central.
According to police, the incident was reported on Sunday by Assistant Chief Timothy Kibitok Sang after he received information that a house belonging to Rodgers Kipketer Kemboi, described by residents as a notorious criminal, had been set ablaze by members of the public.
Police officers, including the OCS, DCI detectives and Crime Scene Investigations personnel, visited the scene and established that the suspect allegedly accosted his neighbour DJK aged 50 years old as she walked home through a maize farm path.
The suspect reportedly slapped her, threw her to the ground, tore her blouse and attempted to rape her before the woman screamed for help.
Members of the public responded to her distress calls, prompting the suspect to flee and barricade himself inside his house while armed with an axe and a slasher.
Police said the mob surrounded the house, but the suspect escaped through a window, abandoning the two weapons.
During the confrontation, the suspect sustained injuries allegedly inflicted by the mob.
The agitated crowd also torched a grass thatched kitchen and destroyed the walls and iron-sheet roof of his mud-walled house.
The suspect fled to Chepterit, where relatives rushed him to Kapsabet Referral Hospital.
He remains admitted with head, right shoulder and right arm injuries believed to have been caused by a sharp object.
The victim was treated at Kilibwoni Health Centre.
Police recovered the axe and slasher at the scene, which was processed and documented by crime scene investigators.
Investigations into the attempted rape, assault and arson incidents are ongoing.
