Ambassador Dr. Josephine Ojiambo is one of Kenya’s most accomplished diplomats, development experts and women leaders, whose distinguished career has spanned academia, international diplomacy, public service and global development.
As political attention gradually shifts towards the 2027 General Election, her name has emerged among those being mentioned in connection with the future leadership of Funyula Constituency, bringing with it decades of experience earned both in Kenya and on the international stage.
Dr. Ojiambo is in her 60’s and comes from one of Busia County’s most distinguished families.
She is the daughter of the late Professor Hillary Peter Ojiambo, Kenya’s pioneering cardiologist whose work revolutionised cardiac medicine in the country, and Professor Julia Ojiambo, an educationist, former Busia Central Member of Parliament, former Assistant Minister, former KANU Director of Youth and Women’s Affairs, founder and longtime leader of the Labour Party of Kenya, and one of the country’s most respected advocates for women’s empowerment.
Growing up in a family where education, discipline, integrity and public service were guiding principles, Dr. Ojiambo developed a passion for leadership and service at an early age.
She pursued higher education in Kenya before advancing her studies abroad, eventually earning a doctorate and building expertise in development, governance, international relations and public policy.
Dr. Ojiambo is married and has maintained a relatively private family life, preferring to let her professional achievements and public service define her career.
Throughout her life, she has consistently demonstrated humility, professionalism and a deep commitment to improving the lives of others.
Before joining international diplomacy, she served as an honorary lecturer at the University of Nairobi, mentoring young scholars and sharing her extensive knowledge in development and public policy.

Her greatest international achievement came when she was appointed Assistant Secretary-General and later Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, becoming one of the highest-ranking Kenyan women ever to serve within the 56-member organisation.

She also represented the Commonwealth at major United Nations forums, international development conferences and global policy dialogues, where she consistently projected Kenya’s reputation as a source of capable and visionary leadership.
