Police in Kisumu have arrested 30 people during a major operation targeting criminal gangs, illegal touts and individuals posing as public service vehicle (PSV) conductors at the Kisumu Bus Park.
According to police, officers from Kisumu Central Police Station they conducted the operation following complaints that the suspects were harassing commuters and misleading passengers into boarding different matatus.
The suspects were also linked to cases of mobile phone snatching and other criminal activities within the bus park and its surrounding areas.
Of the 30 suspects arrested, 20 were arraigned before the Kisumu City Law Courts on Friday and charged with touting contrary to the Kisumu County Transport Act, 2019.
The remaining 10 suspects were presented before the Kisumu Chief Magistrate’s Court to face charges of acting as PSV conductors without the required conductor’s badges under the Traffic Act.
Police said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to restore order, enhance commuter safety and eliminate criminal elements operating within the city’s transport sector.
They added that the operation will continue as police intensify efforts to rid the bus park and its environs of gangs and illegal operators.
