Murder Suspects Escape from Kadzandani Police Cells in Nyali

By Our Correspondent,Nyali.

A major manhunt has been launched after two murder suspects escaped from lawful police custody at Kadzandani Police Station in Nyali, Mombasa County.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Friday.

They have been identified as Anthony Changawa Charo, 23, and Seif Kai Makemba, 30.

The two had been in police custody since their arrest on July 8, 2026, in connection with a murder case.

According to a police incident report, the suspects had been remanded at the Police Station for 16 days following orders issued by the Shanzu Law Courts to allow detectives to complete investigations.

Police said the two had already been positively identified by witnesses during an identification parade conducted on July 14 and were scheduled to undergo mental assessment on July 22 before taking plea.

Their escape was discovered at about 6.04 a.m. during the routine handover between officers on duty.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly cut through the metallic security grill on a toilet window, removed ventilation blocks to create an opening, and escaped before scaling the station’s perimeter wall.

Senior police officers, including Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono and County Criminal Investigations Officer George Muriuki, visited the scene, where investigations were immediately launched.

Police have opened an inquiry to establish how the suspects escaped, determine whether there were security lapses or negligence, and recommend appropriate disciplinary or administrative action where necessary.

Police have circulated the suspects’ details to all police formations, and efforts to trace and re-arrest them are ongoing.
