A prison warder attached to Bomet GK Prison has been arrested and is expected to be arraigned in court over allegations of unlawfully retaining Sh98,000 that was mistakenly sent to his mobile money account.
According to a police report from Central Police Station in Nairobi, the officer, identified as Police Constable Machera Thomus Maroa, was arrested on Friday evening at Prison Services Headquarters, Magereza House, by officers from Central Police Station.
Police said that on May 28, 2025, the officer received Sh98,000 from a mobile phone number by mistake.
Despite requests to reverse the erroneous transaction, he declined and continued to retain the funds without the sender’s consent.
Investigators have recommended that he be charged with intentionally withholding payments delivered to him erroneously, contrary to Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
The suspect remains in custody at Central Police Station and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday as
