Police in Kwale County have launched investigations into a suspected arson attack after a caretaker’s house at an apartment in Diani was set ablaze, with threatening leaflets left at the scene.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at around 11:50 p.m. on July 16 at Casarosa Villa Apartment in the Mwabungo area of Diani.
The caretaker, Brian Wekesa, told police he was asleep in his one bedroom permanent house when he suddenly woke up to find it engulfed in flames.
He immediately alerted the apartment owner, Joseph Mwelu, a resident of Nyali, Mombasa, who advised him to contact the fire brigade.
However, by the time help could arrive, the house had already been reduced to ashes.
With the assistance of neighbours, Wekesa managed to extinguish the remaining flames.
On the following morning, while inspecting the scene, he reportedly discovered leaflets bearing threats written in Kiswahili stating: “Sisi kama Waislamu hatutaki ushoga hapa, la sivyo tutachoma kila kitu” (“As Muslims, we do not want homosexuality here; otherwise, we will burn everything”).
Officers from Diani Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the DCI and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel, visited the scene, documented the incident and photographed the evidence.
Property of unknown value was destroyed in the fire, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Detectives from DCI Msambweni have launched the probe into the suspected arson and the origin of the threatening leaflets.
