A police officer attached to Syokimau Police Station and his accomplice have been arrested after they were accused of impersonating detectives, unlawfully detaining a businessman and demanding money for his release.
According to a police report, the incident began when Kelvin Murimi was at his shop in Syokimau with his wife.
Two men reportedly introduced themselves as officers from the DCI headquarters and ordered him to open the premises for a search, claiming they were looking for cannabis sativa.
The suspects allegedly searched the shop but recovered nothing.
They then handcuffed Murimi, bundled him into a green Mitsubishi Mirage, registration number KDB 714P, and confiscated his Samsung mobile phone valued at Sh13,000.
Police said the group drove towards the DCI headquarters before entering Muthaiga Police Station parking yard.
They later proceeded to Pangani Police Station, where they briefly entered before making a U-turn and parking outside the station.
Officers at Pangani Police Station became suspicious and moved to interrogate the group.
During the confrontation, one suspect escaped with the complainant’s mobile phone.
Police arrested Police Constable Godfrey Kiprotich, attached to Syokimau Police Station, together with the vehicle’s driver, Johnson Mutunga.
The identity of the suspect who fled has not yet been established.
The complainant alleged that the group had been demanding money in exchange for his release.
The two suspects were booked at Pangani Police Station and remain in custody pending further investigations.
