Construction work in Moyale town took an unexpected turn today after a resident discovered thousands of World War 2 rounds of ammunition buried underground while digging the foundation for a house.
According to police, the incident was reported on Wednesday by Abdinizak Haji, who alerted authorities after uncovering metallic objects at his construction site opposite Moyale Township Senior School.
A team comprising the OCPD,the DCI officers and the OCS Moyale Police Station visited the scene and confirmed that the objects were ammunition.
Police recovered a total of 4,060 rounds oammunition, believed to have been left behind by Italian forces during their military campaign in the region in 1935.
The recovered ammunition was safely collected and transported to the Moyale Police Station armoury, where it will be stored pending destruction.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Moyale has launched further inquiries into the discovery, although preliminary assessments indicate the ammunition is of historical origin.
No injuries or security threats were reported during the recovery operation.
