A medical evacuation aircraft scheduled to fly from Nairobi’s JKIA) to Baidoa, Somalia, was on Friday delayed briefly after its cockpit door seal was found tampered with before departure.
According to a police incident report, the matter was reported at JKIA Police Station at about 7:50 a.m. by the captain of the day, Wilson Nganga. He had arrived at the airport at 4:50 a.m. to operate Flight DO228, registration 5Y-CGD, operated by Kasas Limited, when he discovered that the cockpit door seal had been interfered with.
A multi-agency security team was immediately deployed to the aircraft, which had been parked at the airside between Hotel 8 and Hotel 9 since 7:21 p.m. on July 23.
The plane was scheduled to depart for Baidoa on a medical evacuation mission.
The aircraft underwent a thorough security inspection involving sniffer dogs and the Bomb Disposal Unit.
During the search, the captain found that the first aid kit had been opened, the document bag had been moved and the seal on a portable breathing equipment box had been broken.
However, nothing was reported stolen and the rest of the aircraft remained intact.
After completing the inspection, the captain declared the aircraft airworthy and fit for the mission.
The incident is under investigation by the Police Unit Investigations (PUI) and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at JKIA.
