Five people were arrested and a firearm recovered after rival political groups clashed in Homa Bay Town during a tour by the Linda Mwananchi Brigade led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Sunday.
Police said the team had held a series of rallies across Homa Bay County, beginning in Nyadhiwa, Suba South, before arriving in Homa Bay Town at about 6:30pm.
The group was reportedly confronted by supporters of the ODM-linked Linda Ground team, triggering a confrontation between the rival groups.
Police officers deployed live ammunition, blank rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
Among those arrested were advocate Samuel Nyauke, Rangwe MP aspirant Kennedy Odhiambo Okoth, Wilfred Onyango Siguda, Fredrick Omollo and Emily Obuya.
The five were arrested while travelling in two white Prado vehicles. One vehicle was fitted with registration number KAR 903F, which police suspect could be a fake number plate, while another allegedly had its registration number concealed with cell tape, displaying KDU 495E instead of KDU 195E.
A search conducted after the suspects were escorted to Homa Bay Police Station led to the recovery of a Mini-Ceska firearm loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.
Police said the firearm was recovered from Okoth, who is a civilian licensed firearm holder.
The suspects were booked and placed in custody as investigations continue.
The rest of the political group dispersed and travelled towards Kisumu.
