The months ahead offer Kenya a golden opportunity to grow Tourism

By Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife.

The coming months present Kenya with a golden opportunity to build on the strong momentum in tourism, prepare destinations for increased travel and ensure more Kenyans benefit from the sector’s economic opportunities.

Tourism is more than travel. It drives jobs, enterprise and local economic development, supporting everyone from farmers supplying hotels with fresh produce to tour guides, drivers and artisans selling locally made products.

As the year enters its final months, Kenya should use the period to prepare, innovate and position itself for sustained tourism growth.

While the country is internationally recognised for its wildlife and beaches, its tourism offering extends to diverse cultures, landscapes, mountains, forests, lakes, cuisine, sporting activities and the growing Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

Diversification remains central to the Government’s tourism policy.

We want visitors to stay longer, explore more destinations and experience different aspects of Kenya, while ensuring counties and communities participate meaningfully in the tourism economy.

Domestic tourism is equally important.

Kenyans are encouraged to explore destinations within the country, as every domestic trip supports local businesses, creates demand for tourism services and contributes to livelihoods.

At the same time, tourism growth must be responsible and sustainable.

Wildlife, forests, oceans, mountains and cultural heritage are national treasures that must be protected. Conservation is therefore at the heart of securing the industry’s future.

Tourism businesses must improve service standards, communities should benefit from tourism, and visitors should respect Kenya’s environment, wildlife and cultural heritage.

Government will continue providing policy direction, infrastructure support, regulation and marketing to create an enabling environment.

Technology is also transforming tourism through digital platforms, online booking, electronic payments and improved access to destination information, creating new opportunities, particularly for small enterprises.

The future of Kenyan tourism is bright.

The task now is to sustain the momentum, prepare well and ensure tourism benefits as many Kenyans as possible.

Let us use the coming months to open our doors wider, explore our own country, support local enterprises and proudly share Kenya’s story with the world.
