Former Alego Usonga MP Otieno Mak’Onyango has died while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

Mak’Onyango, who represented the Siaya County constituency from 1992 to 1997, died on Sunday according to an announcement by current area MP Samuel Atandi.

Before joining politics, Mak’Onyango worked as a journalist with The East African Standard, now The Standard newspaper.

His journalism career was interrupted in August 1982 when he was arrested following the failed military coup against the government of former President Daniel arap Moi.

He spent about four years in detention.

In 2003, he sued the government over his detention, and the High Court awarded him Sh20 million in damages in 2012 after finding that his constitutional rights had been violated.

However, reports later indicated that he faced financial difficulties despite the court award.

Mourning the former legislator, Atandi said Alego Usonga had lost a leader whose contribution would remain part of the constituency’s political history.
