Parents have been urged to stop hiding children living with disabilities and ensure they access education, healthcare and other essential services to help them develop their abilities and participate fully in society.
Speaking during an event at Songa Mbele na Masomo Learning Centre in Mukuru-Kisii slum, South B, Nairobi County, Head of Rehabilitation Services in Nairobi County Valentine Amalia said every child has a right to education regardless of disability.
The centre is run by the faith-based Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC).

Amalia called for early detection, intervention, rehabilitation services, assistive devices and referrals to improve support for children with disabilities.
He also raised concerns over the inaccessibility of public service vehicles (PSVs), urging improvements in public transport and rehabilitation services.
MPC Director Sister Mary Killeen urged Kenyans to embrace children living with disabilities, warning against stigma and discrimination that deny them dignity and equal opportunities.
Faith Chabari said some parents continued to conceal their children because of traditional beliefs that associate disability with a curse or shame.

She urged families to enrol the children in school to help them acquire knowledge, practical skills and confidence for independent living.
The event was organised through a partnership involving MPC, Stanbic Foundation and Cheshire Disability Services under the theme “It Is Not Disability, It’s a Different Ability,” which sought to highlight the talents and potential of children with disabilities.
MPC manager Hellen Mwangi said the centre served children from Mukuru slums, where social and economic challenges often limited access to specialised education and support services.
She appealed to well-wishers, corporate organisations and partners to support the institution’s inclusive education programmes.
The children entertained guests with songs and dance, showcasing their talents.
The event ended with a cake-cutting ceremony and renewed calls for families and communities to ensure children living with disabilities receive acceptance, support and equal opportunities to learn and thrive.
