Police in Naivasha have recovered an improvised explosive following an explosion scare that caused panic among residents and traders at Kapendo Shopping Centre.
According to police at Utheri wa Lari Police station,the incident happened around 11:00am on Sunday.
Its occurence was first reported via telephone by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Maai Mahiu Railway Police Station.
The OCS reported to her seniors that on Sunday night she heard a loud explosion while at the station, believed to have originated from Kapendo Shopping Centre.
She immediately mobilised officers and rushed to the scene, where preliminary investigations revealed that a man later identified as Fredrick Maina Kanini had ignited an improvised device which exploded.
It triggered fear and confusion among members of the public and the business community.
The suspect initially fled the scene under the cover of darkness.
Following intelligence led operations, officers managed to recover a partly burnt remaining component of the explosive device.
After a combined efforts of police and their DCI counterparts,the suspect, was arrested and put in custody to assist with the probe.
The recovered device was preserved at the Naivaaha police station as bomb experts from Nakuru were called in and examined the device, confirming that it was a fireworks device commonly used during festive seasons.
Police have meanwhile urged members of the public to refrain from handling or detonating suspicious devices and to report such incidents promptly to security agencies.
