Police in Murang’a County have launched investigations into suspected religious cult activities following reports of a secretive sect operating in Ithanga/Kakuzi area.
A report has been filed at Ithanga Police Station in Murang’a county by Nyaitera Sub-location Assistant Chief Davidson Macharia.
The report is a follow up to an earlier incident involving the sudden death of a minor, recorded at Kirathani Police Post.
Police in the area say a suspected cultic religious group known as Kavonokya has emerged within Kirathani and Nyaitera areas of Ithanga Ward.
The group’s followers allegedly shun modern medicine and do not seek treatment from doctors.
Their way of life has raised concerns about the welfare of children and vulnerable members.
Police further noted that the group does not operate from any known church structure, nor does it have a visible logo or formal place of worship.
Instead, members reportedly conduct their religious services secretly within homesteads belonging to followers.
Preliminary assessments estimate the group’s membership at about 100 people, most of them residents of Kirathani and Nyaitera areas.
The SubCounty Criminal Investigations Officer (SCIO) in Ithanga/Kakuzi has taken over the matter, with further investigations ongoing.
