By Our Reporter,Mbale

A police officer guarding the Vihiga County Assembly was early today seriously injured after being attacked by unknown assailants who escaped with his firearm in a daring early morning robbery.

According to a report recorded at Vihiga Police Station, the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m., approximately 200 metres west of the station, at the County Assembly main gate.

The attack was reported by Administration Police Constable Francis Wekesa, who was on duty at Gate B alongside his colleague Administration Police Constable Abiud Simiyu, stationed at Gate A.

Wekesa told police that he heard distress screams from his colleague and rushed to the guardroom to check on him.

Upon arrival, he found Simiyu lying unconscious in a pool of blood with serious head injuries, while his G3 rifle was missing.

Efforts to call him were unsuccessful.

Wekesa immediately raised an alarm and fired one round of ammunition from his service rifle to alert other officers.

Additional police officers responded swiftly to the scene.

Senior officers, led by Vihiga SubCounty Police Commander William Sirengo and Deputy SubCounty Police Commander Kemunto, visited and processed the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the attackers sneaked into the guardroom, assaulted the officer using a sharp object, and made away with his G3 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.

The injured officer was rushed to Vihiga County Teaching and Referral Hospital in serious condition and was expected to be referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

A security search operation is ongoing within the surrounding area as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Vihiga, pursue the suspects.
