Parents Storm Chango Secondary,Vihiga Over Poor KCSE Results

By Our Reporter,Vihiga

Tension gripped Chango Secondary School in Vihiga County on Monday morning after dozens of parents staged a peaceful demonstration at the school gate to protest what they termed as persistent poor academic performance.

According to police the protest was reported at around 9:10 a.m. by the school principal, Martin Wanyonyi.

Officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) rushed to the scene in Chango, Central Maragoli Location.

On arrival, police found about 50 community members, most of them parents, peacefully demonstrating while armed with placards, twigs and vuvuzelas.

The parents accused the school administration of presiding over a steady decline in academic performance, blaming the trend on the current principal’s tenure.

They claimed that Chango Secondary School’s mean grade had dropped sharply from 6.5 in previous years to 3.1 in the most recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, sparking frustration and concern among parents.

Police engaged the protesters and addressed their concerns, after which the group dispersed peacefully without any injuries or destruction of property.

The situation was brought under control by about 8:30 a.m., with officers remaining on the ground to monitor for any further unrest.

Authorities described the demonstration as calm and orderly, even as calls grow for education officials to intervene and address the concerns raised by parents over the school’s academic performance.
