Twelve Grade 10 students and their parents were left stranded in Kisumu on Tuesday after a promised scholarship arrangement raised suspicion.
The incident prompted swift police intervention.
Police at Kondele Police Station were informed of it by Manyatta A Sub location Assistant Chief Agnes, who said the families were seeking help after waiting the entire day for a man who had promised to secure scholarships for their children at St Albert Chiepe Secondary School in Homa Bay County.
Instead of appearing in person, the organizer allegedly sent a matatu to collect the students, a move that alarmed parents.
Police officers led by the Kondele OCS rushed to the area and found the parents at the assistant chief’s office, while the students aged between 15 and 17 were waiting nearby at a motorcycle shed close to Manyatta Primary School with their luggage.
The group comprised nine girls and three boys, all dressed in different school uniforms.
At the scene, officers recovered a matatu, registration number KDC 497H, and arrested its driver and conductor for questioning.
Further operations led to the arrest of the alleged organizer, a 26 year old man, at Otonglo area.
Police later contacted the principal of St Albert Chiepe Secondary School, who confirmed that a legitimate scholarship programme exists and assured authorities that the students would be received at the school the following day (today) in coordination with Kondele Police Station.
Investigations are ongoing as police hold the suspects and the vehicle.
