Tension briefly flared at Tharaka University College on Monday afternoon after students prevented former Chief Justice David Maraga, now leader of the United Green Movement (UGM), from accessing the institution where his team intended to conduct national ID and voter registration activities.
According to Police report the incident occurred at around 1:20pm when the UGM party leader arrived with his convoy at the institution located in Tharaka South Sub-County, Tharaka Nithi County.
Students reportedly barricaded the access road approximately 0.5 kilometres from the main entrance by placing stones, effectively blocking the convoy from proceeding into the campus.
Police said the UGM team had planned to pitch tents within the university grounds to facilitate ID card and voter registration for students and residents.
However, due to the blockade, Maraga and his entourage were unable to gain entry.
After a brief standoff and without any confrontation, the convoy turned back and proceeded towards Meru direction.
Authorities confirmed that no violence, injuries, or damage to property were reported during the incident.
Calm was later restored, and normalcy resumed at the institution.
Police noted that investigations may be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the students’ actions, even as leaders continue to urge for peaceful engagement between political actors and learning institutions during civic activities.
