A leaked intelligence report has raised concerns within the Linda Mwananchi group leadership, warning that many supporters attending their rallies have not registered as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to the confidential assessment by a state intelligence agency, the large crowds witnessed at the rallies may not necessarily translate into votes at the ballot box.
The report indicates that a significant number of the enthusiastic attendees, mostly youths lack national identity cards or voter registration, making them ineligible to participate in the election unless urgent action is taken.
Its analysis draws parallels with the previous election cycle involving the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, who commanded a massive and loyal following across the country. Despite the huge turnout at his political rallies, the report notes that the support did not fully convert into votes on election day, highlighting a gap between political enthusiasm and actual voter participation.
The report specifically mentions Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of ODM, suggesting that if he or leaders aligned with the Linda Mwananchi movement were to contest in the upcoming elections without addressing the voter registration gap, the outcome could be disappointing for the group.
It warns that unless immediate steps are taken to mobilize supporters particularly young people to obtain national identity cards and register as voters with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the opposition movement risks losing political momentum.
Under such circumstances, the report concludes, William Ruto could have a relatively easier path to re-election if the opposition fails to convert its visible street support into verified votes.
Political analysts say the findings underscore a long- standing challenge in Kenyan politics where massive rally attendance does not always reflect actual electoral turnout.
Observers now say the coming months will be critical for opposition leaders, who may need to shift focus from rally mobilization to voter registration drives if they hope to mount a serious challenge in 2027.
