Kenyan Media Personalities Eye Political Power in 2027 Race

As Kenya inches closer to the 2027 General Election, a noticeable trend is emerging: prominent media personalities are increasingly trading the newsroom for the political arena. This shift reflects a growing belief among journalists and broadcasters that they can directly influence governance rather than merely report on it.

Among those reportedly eyeing political seats is Trevor Ombija, a well-known TV anchor who has signaled interest in the Nyakach parliamentary seat. His move mirrors a broader pattern of journalists leveraging their public visibility and credibility to build political capital. Similarly, Lulu Hassan, a popular Swahili news anchor, has been mentioned among those considering a bid, reportedly for the Mvita constituency.

Digital-era personalities are also joining the race. Maverick Aoko has already declared her intention to vie for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat, positioning herself as a bold, anti-establishment voice appealing to younger voters.

This trend is not entirely new. Kenya has previously seen successful transitions from media to politics, such as Mohamed Ali, popularly known as Moha Jicho Pevu, who moved from investigative journalism to become Nyali MP in 2017. His success has arguably inspired a new generation of media figures to consider similar paths.

The motivations behind these transitions vary. Some journalists cite frustration with systemic issues they have long reported on, including corruption, governance gaps, and youth unemployment. Others see politics as a natural progression of their role as public opinion shapers.

However, challenges remain. Media popularity does not always translate into electoral success, especially in a political landscape often influenced by party structures, resources, and grassroots networks. Nonetheless, the entry of media personalities into politics could inject fresh perspectives, enhance accountability, and reshape the relationship between the media and political power in Kenya.
