Students at Kangemi boys high School,Nairobi today staged an early morning walkout protesting alleged poor food quality, planned examinations, and dissatisfaction with the school’s leadership structure.
According to a report filed at Kangemi Police Station, the unrest began at around 4:00 a.m. when students woke the school principal, Musembi Mulatya, declaring they would not sit for exams.
The students also cited complaints about the quality of food served at the institution and voiced opposition to the appointment of a female deputy principal.
Police officers responding to the incident found students gathered within the school compound, demanding to be allowed to leave and return home.
The officers managed to calm the situation, persuading the students to return to their dormitories.
However, shortly after, at approximately 5:50 a.m., the school administration discovered a mass exodus had taken place.
Out of the total student population, only 90 students remained within the school, while about 298 had left the premises, reportedly heading to their homes.
Despite the unrest and mass walkout, no destruction of school property was reported.
School authorities who talked to DNK-International on condition of anonymity said that they were currently managing the situation and working to address the grievances raised by the students, as well as account for those who left.
