Police in North Kinangop,Nyandarua county have recovered a six day old baby boy who had been stolen from his mother under deceptive circumstances and arrested a suspect.
The incident which was reported at Kinangop Police Station involved a mother identified as Melvin Njoi, who had been admitted at Engineer County Hospital.
According to reports, she was approached by a woman known to her, who had been frequenting the maternity ward.
The suspect allegedly gained the mother’s trust by offering to clear her outstanding medical bill and later volunteered to escort her home after discharge.
The two left the hospital together with the newborn, Samuel Omunyi, and boarded a matatu to Ndinda Trading Centre.
Upon arrival, the suspect reportedly lured the mother to a nearby food vendor, offering to hold the baby.
When the mother returned moments later, both the suspect and the infant had disappeared.
Efforts to trace them immediately proved futile, prompting the distressed mother to report the matter to hospital authorities before seeking police intervention.
Following investigations, police received information about a young woman in possession of a newborn despite having no known pregnancy history.
Officers, led by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), proceeded to the suspect’s residence.
After the occupants refused to open the door, officers forcefully gained entry and arrested the suspect, identified as Jennifer Nyambura Kibet, aged 18.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of new baby clothes believed to be linked to the stolen child.
Although the suspect claimed the baby was hers, she failed to provide a consistent account.
Both the suspect and the infant were escorted to Engineer County Hospital, where the child was admitted to the nursery unit in stable condition.
The biological mother was contacted and positively identified her child.
The suspect is currently in police custody at Kinangop Police Station and is expected to face charges in court as investigations continue.
