OCS attached to Bangale Police Station in Tana River County has died under unclear circumstances following a fierce gun battle between security officers and suspected militia members in Bangale Sub-County.
According to a police report, the incident occurred on Thursday, June 25 when a joint security team comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Administration Police Service (APS), and General Service Unit (GSU) was dispatched to Biyagadud area following an earlier security incident.
The operation was led by Bangale OCPD Julius Rotich.
Security officers pursued the suspected militia towards the Lebile area, where they came into direct contact with the group, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire that reportedly lasted about 40 minutes.
After the shooting subsided, it was discovered that the OCS Chief Inspector Sylvester Wambua was missing.
A search team was immediately deployed and later found the officer lying face down approximately 100 metres from the tarmac road, with his G3 rifle beside him.
Officers who examined the body reported no visible physical injuries, although he appeared unresponsive and stiff.
The officer was rushed to Medinah Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
His body has been preserved at the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
