Naomi was attempting a total rebranding of her identity based on her current pain. After losing her husband and sons, she returned home and essentially asked everyone to update her contact info to “Mara,” which means bitter. We’ve all been there—letting a season of loss or a “bitter” circumstance become the headline of our lives.
It’s tempting to let a difficult chapter edit our entire story. Naomi was looking at her empty hands and deciding her future was equally empty. But here is the catch: while Naomi was calling herself “Bitter,” God was still calling her “Pleasant.” She was standing in the very fields where her family’s legacy would be restored through Ruth. Your current struggle is a season, not a permanent name change. Bitterness is a valid feeling, but it is a terrible foundation for your identity.
Examine the “names” you’ve been calling yourself lately—Failure, Burden, or Stagnant. Replace one of those labels today with a truth about your future potential, and share a word of encouragement with someone else who feels defined by their setbacks.
