As the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maralal undergoes one of the most significant governance reforms in its history, its head Rt. Rev. Bishop Hieronymus Emusugut Joya, has emerged as one of Kenya’s most outspoken Catholic leaders on integrity, accountability and responsible stewardship of Church resources.
Early this month, Bishop Joya drew national attention after suspending seven priests pending investigations over allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of ecclesiastical authority,alcoholism and misconduct.
Those affected were Rev. Fr. Paul Maina, Rev. Fr. Peter Musau, Rev. Fr. Stephen Lekasuyan, Rev. Fr. Peter Nderitu, Rev. Fr. Christopher Letikirich, Rev. Fr. John Dida and Rev. Fr. Jonathan Namoni.
The disciplinary action formed part of sweeping reforms aimed at restoring transparency, discipline and confidence within the Diocese.
Born on April 17,1965 in Asinge Village, Teso South, Busia County, Bishop Joya is currently 61 years old.
He was raised in a devout Catholic family and attended Changana Primary School in Kericho before completing his primary education at Asinge Primary School in Busia.
Bishop Joya later joined St. Peter’s Minor Seminary, Mukumu, in Kakamega County for his secondary education, where his vocation to the priesthood was nurtured.
Inspired by the missionary work of the Consolata Missionaries, whose dedication to serving remote and marginalised communities deeply impressed him, Joya joined the congregation in 1990.
He pursued philosophy at the Consolata Institute, earning a Diploma in Religious Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy before proceeding to Tangaza University College in Nairobi for theological studies.
He later obtained a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), strengthening his pastoral and administrative leadership skills.
He made his perpetual vows in November 1997 and was ordained a Catholic priest on September 5,1998.
His priestly ministry took him to Loiyangalani Mission in Marsabit before serving as Rector and formator at the Consolata Philosophicum Seminary in Nairobi.
He also worked as Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator and Director of the Blessed Joseph Allamano Pastoral Centre in Maralal before becoming Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries in Kenya and Uganda.
These assignments according to his peers who talked to DNK-International earned him a reputation as a disciplined administrator and an experienced missionary.
Pope Francis appointed Fr. Hieronymus Joya as the second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maralal on July 20, 2022, succeeding Bishop Emeritus Virgilio Pante.
He was consecrated and officially installed on October 22, 2022, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Diocese.
Since assuming office, Bishop Joya has championed financial prudence, institutional reforms, improved governance and pastoral renewal.
He has strengthened accountability systems, reorganised diocesan administration, promoted better management of Church resources and encouraged clergy to embrace servant leadership.
His administration has also continued supporting education, peace building initiatives and evangelisation across Samburu County.
His July 2026 pastoral letter remains one of his defining moments.
Explaining the disciplinary measures against the priests, he wrote: “It is painful to state that I found the diocese with multiple problems but no one was willing to tell me the cause of the problems and how to get the solution.”
He maintained that genuine reform was necessary to safeguard the Church’s mission and restore public trust.
Among his memorable messages are his repeated calls for integrity, responsible stewardship and faithful service.
He has consistently reminded clergy that Church leadership is a sacred responsibility requiring humility, transparency and accountability rather than personal privilege.
Today, Bishop Hieronymus Emusugut Joya is widely regarded as a courageous Church leader determined to strengthen governance while preserving the spiritual mission of the Catholic Church.
His willingness to confront difficult issues within the clergy has earned praise from supporters who view his reforms as necessary for rebuilding confidence in the Diocese, while also sparking debate over the future direction of Church leadership in northern Kenya.
