A five year old boy was found dead in a single roomed house in Mlolongo, Machakos County, in an incident police are treating as murder.
The incident was reported at Mlolongo Police Station on Tuesday after the boy’s mother, Irene Masaka, went to the house following a message from her estranged husband, Nathan Khaemba, asking her to prepare food for their children.
According to the police report, Masaka had separated from Khaemba about a month earlier following a disagreement and had left with their two children.
On August 16, she returned the children to their father after he requested them.
She arrived at the house at about 4pm on August 18 and found her two year-old daughter, Diana Khaemba, crying at the gate.
Upon entering the house, she discovered her five year old son, Biden Khaemba, lying motionless on a mattress.
The mother reportedly tried calling her husband, but his phone was switched off.
Police officers who visited the scene established that the boy was suspected to have been poisoned.
A quarter cup containing suspected poison and vomit was recovered from the scene.
The scene was processed by detectives, while the child’s body, which had visible injuries on the legs, was transferred to Saitoti Medical Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination.
The boy’s father, who is being treated as the prime suspect, was still at large by the time of filing the report.
