The DPP has charged a matatu driver over the deaths of three people during a “Manyoka” driving challenge along Enterprises Road in Nairobi.

Sammy Murigi Maina was charged on Thursday with causing the deaths of Charles Brandy Wahome, Tamia Kalekya Nyambura and Edwin Kago.

The prosecution told the court that on June 3, 2026, at about 8pm, along Enterprises Road opposite KCB Bank in Nairobi County, Maina, while driving motor vehicle registration number KDU 887C, an Isuzu minibus operated by Risen Sacco, drove recklessly and dangerously, resulting in the deaths of the three victims.

Maina is alleged to have driven the vehicle in a dangerous manner commonly referred to as “Manyoka” style, contrary to Section 42(3) of the Traffic Act.

He also faces two additional counts of driving a motor vehicle on a public road without due care and attention, as well as a charge of driving an unroadworthy motor vehicle on a public road.

The prosecution further alleges that his actions occasioned bodily harm to Eugene Ongundi and Domnic Mulwa.
Maina appeared before Hon. Paul Mutai, where he pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
