Born Sarah Njeri Mwangi in Nairobi on April 30, 1971,she grew up in different parts of the country including Baba Dogo, Kiambu and Loitoktok, with her childhood experiences later influencing her music, particularly her use of Kiswahili.

Sarah attended Baba Dogo Primary School and schools in Kiambu before completing her primary education in Loitoktok.

She later joined St Valentine High School in Machakos, but her secondary education was interrupted following difficulties in her family.

Dr.Sarah K trained in dressmaking and tailoring, having initially hoped to become a fashion designer.

According to her,her childhood and early adult life were marked by hardship.

She also sold vegetables to support herself and her family.

She has openly recalled that at one point she earned only Sh400 a month.

Her passion for music started when she was young through Sunday School and church singing.

She became a praise and worship leader before formally beginning her recording career in 1991.

Her early years in music were difficult, and she has recalled borrowing money for transport, moving from studio to studio and personally selling her recordings.

She said that she spent about 18 years singing before experiencing a major breakthrough.

Her career gradually gained momentum after performances that attracted the attention of radio audiences.

One of her best-known songs, “Liseme,” became a popular worship anthem and won Worship Song of the Year at the 2012 Groove Awards.

She later won further recognition, including Female Artiste of the Year at the 2014 Groove Awards.
