A family of five was rescued by police in Mombasa after they were found walking naked along Moi Avenue while praying, drawing a large crowd that was on the verge of attacking them.
According to police, officers from Central Police Station who responded to a distress call rushed to the scene, where they found the family surrounded by members of the public.
The officers rescued them and escorted them to the police station before conducting preliminary investigations.
Investigations established that the family had travelled from Mbeere in Embu County and had been temporarily staying in the Chaani area of Changamwe Sub-county.
They reportedly believed they had received spiritual instructions requiring them to remain naked to avoid committing sins, as they believed they were living in the “last days.”
Police said the family members appeared to be in a disturbed mental state and were largely unresponsive to questions.
The four adults identified as mother Winnycate Karemi, her daughters Selmith Muthoni and Pauline Wanja, and her son Innocent Wachira—were rushed to Port Reitz Sub-County Hospital, where they were admitted for treatment and further medical assessment.
The seven year old child, Divane Makena, was later released into the care of an aunt from Samburu Sub-county in Kwale County.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, and a progress report is expected.
