Lawyer, businessman and governance activist Morara Kebaso has emerged as one of Kenya’s most recognizable youthful political figures after rising to national prominence through his relentless online exposure of stalled government projects and alleged corruption.
His latest political move,abandoning his own INJECT Party to seek the Borabu parliamentary seat on former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party ticket marks a significant shift in a career that has blended activism, business and politics.
Morara, who is in his 30’s, is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
He studied law and built his early career in legal practice before venturing into entrepreneurship.
Apart from legal work, he has invested in the furniture business in Nairobi, where he has often said he earns his income, enabling him to sustain his activism independently.
He is married and has frequently acknowledged the support of his family throughout his public life.
His national breakthrough came in 2024 during the Gen Z-led anti-government protests.
Through his viral “Vampire Diaries” series, Morara travelled across the country documenting stalled public projects that had already consumed millions or even billions of taxpayers’ money.
His investigative style, which combined satire with evidence gathered from project sites, quickly attracted a huge following among young Kenyans demanding greater accountability.
The exposes transformed him into one of the country’s leading anti-corruption voices.
Although as established by DNK-International not every project he highlighted resulted in prosecutions or recoveries, his work reignited public debate on accountability, increased pressure on public officials to explain delayed projects and inspired many young Kenyans to participate in civic oversight.
Analysts say his activism demonstrated the growing influence of citizen-led digital accountability in governance.
His activism, however, also brought legal troubles.
Morara was arrested on several occasions and arraigned in court over various allegations, including claims linked to unlawful assembly and other offences arising from his activism, charges he consistently described as politically motivated attempts to intimidate him.
The cases further elevated his public profile as supporters portrayed him as a victim of political persecution, although the legal matters also consumed considerable time and resources.
After months of intensive activism, Morara gradually reduced the frequency of his corruption exposes.
Besides the legal battles, he cited the personal, financial and emotional demands of sustained activism, while increasingly shifting his focus toward building a long term political career.
Initially, Morara had declared interest in contesting the Presidency under the Injection of National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation (INJECT) Party.
However, he has since shelved that ambition in favour of contesting the Borabu parliamentary seat in Nyamira County, currently represented by Patrick Osero of ODM.
He explained that the decision reflects political realities and a desire to build leadership experience from the grassroots before seeking higher office.
In another dramatic turn, Morara announced that he had put the INJECT Party “on the shelf” and joined the Jubilee Party.
He argued that the Jubilee Party remains the dominant political vehicle in the Gusii region where he hails from and offers him a realistic platform to win the Borabu parliamentary seat.
According to Morara, presenting a strong message alone is insufficient if voters are unwilling to embrace the political party delivering it.
His decision to abandon the presidential race in favour of Parliament has generated mixed reactions.
Some supporters have praised it as a pragmatic and mature political calculation, saying leadership should be built progressively.
Others expressed disappointment, arguing that he had inspired many Kenyans with his earlier presidential ambitions.
Nonetheless, political observers note that his decision could encourage more young people to seek elective office beginning at county and constituency levels instead of immediately targeting the presidency.
Morara has consistently urged Kenyan youth to actively participate in politics rather than merely criticize leaders from the sidelines.
His political journey from lawyer and businessman to activist and now parliamentary hopeful has reinforced the message that young professionals can directly compete for leadership positions through democratic processes.
Among his memorable remarks are: “Our mission is to offer solutions,” a slogan he frequently used while promoting the INJECT movement, and his recent declaration that “we have to go with the realities of the politics of the day” while explaining his move to the Jubilee Party.
He has also repeatedly maintained that leaders should remain accountable to taxpayers and that public resources must be used for their intended purposes.
Whether Morara Kebaso’s transition from activist to elected politician succeeds will be tested in the 2027 General Election. Regardless of the outcome, his anti-corruption campaigns have already left a lasting mark on Kenya’s civic space by demonstrating the power of social media, citizen oversight and youth participation in demanding accountability from public institutions.
