Nominated Senator Shakila Abdalla Mohamed has carved out a reputation as one of Kenya’s most resilient coastal leaders, rising from humble beginnings in Lamu County to become a key advocate for women and marginalized communities at the national level.
She was born and raised in Faza Island in Lamu.

Shakila grew up in a modest setting marked by poverty, limited opportunities and deep rooted social challenges.
Her early experiences in the region shaped her determination to fight inequality and uplift her community, particularly in an area where cultural barriers often limited women’s participation in leadership.
She began her education at Lamu Girls Secondary School before pursuing a Certificate in Computer Applications at Intraglobal Training Institute.
Years later, even while actively engaged in politics, she advanced her academic credentials by earning a Bachelor of Business Management from East African University between 2019 and 2022, underscoring her commitment to personal growth and leadership development.

Before venturing into politics,Shakila built a career spanning nearly two decades in the hospitality industry, working in hotel management both at the Coast and in Nairobi.
The experience when she talked to DNK-International exposed her to diverse social and economic realities and helped shape her administrative and people management skills.
Her entry into politics in the late 2000’s as she stated was driven by a desire to address the marginalization she had witnessed while growing up.
She first served as a nominated Member of Parliament between 2008 and 2013, marking her initial step into national leadership.
In 2013, she made history as the first Woman Representative for Lamu County, a position she held until 2017, before returning to Parliament in 2022 as a nominated Senator under the Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya.
She currently serves as a nominated Senator in the Senate of Kenya, where she represents women’s interests at the national level and contributes to legislative processes and oversight.

Throughout her political journey,Shakila has held influential roles in legislative bodies, including serving in both the National Assembly and the Senate, where she has contributed to key committees such as the Senate Business Committee.
Within party structures and women focused organizations, she has also played mentorship roles, helping nurture the next generation of female leaders.
Her influence remains particularly strong along the Coast, especially in Lamu, where she has consistently championed issues such as job opportunities linked to the Lamu Port, infrastructure development, and equitable access to resources.
At the national level, she has been a vocal advocate for gender equality, social justice, and inclusive governance, often pushing for policies that protect the rights of women and marginalized groups.
As a woman politician and an aspirant for Lamu Gubernatorial seat in 2027 and from a conservative background,Shakila’s success stands out as a testament to perseverance and courage.
She has broken barriers in a region where female leadership has traditionally been rare, using her platform to inspire women to pursue leadership and assert their rights.
Through initiatives like the Pamoja Vision Network, she continues to empower youth and women through mentorship and advocacy.
Her public statements have often emphasized unity, merit-based leadership, and the importance of empowering women, particularly in areas such as land ownership and economic independence.

She has maintained that true leadership should transcend ethnic and cultural divisions, focusing instead on service to the people.
From her early days in Faza Island to her current role in the Senate, Shakila Abdalla’s journey reflects a broader story of resilience, determination, and the ongoing push for inclusive representation in Kenya’s political landscape.
