Few entrepreneurs have left a mark on Kenya’s sales and marketing industry quite like Gerishom Ambunya Okonda.

Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of direct sales and experiential marketing in the country, Okonda built a reputation as a transformational trainer, motivational speaker, and youth mentor whose innovative recruitment and marketing strategies opened employment opportunities for thousands of young Kenyans.

Okonda has always said that he developed a passion for sales, leadership, and personal development at an early age.

The enterpreneur’s career trajectory reflects years of practical training in sales, entrepreneurship, and human resource development.

Okonda in a past interview with DNK-International dusclosed that he rose through the ranks of the direct sales industry before establishing DS Max Kenya sometime around late 90’s or ealy 2 000’s , a company that would become synonymous with aggressive field marketing, customer acquisition, and youth empowerment.

Drawing inspiration from the Canadian based DS-Max business model, Okonda introduced a unique approach to sales and marketing that relied heavily on recruiting energetic young people, particularly recent Form Four school and college leavers.

At a time when youth unemployment was a major challenge, he saw an opportunity to train school leavers in communication, customer relations, and salesmanship, transforming them into field marketers capable of promoting products and services for major brands.

His model emphasized discipline, confidence, resilience, and performance based rewards, producing a generation of sales professionals who later advanced into corporate management, entrepreneurship, and business leadership.

Under his leadership, DS Max expanded rapidly and became one of the most recognizable direct marketing organizations in Kenya.

The company reportedly created employment opportunities for hundreds of young people and influenced tens of thousands through training programs, mentorship initiatives, and entrepreneurship forums.

His success earned him recognition as a leading authority in sales development and youth empowerment.

Beyond business,he established himself as a highly sought after motivational speaker and corporate trainer.

Through GO Training Consult, he has conducted leadership, customer service, team building, and personal development programs for numerous corporations, government agencies, educational institutions, and youth organizations across Kenya and beyond.

His motivational talks, often centered on self belief, entrepreneurship, and transformational leadership, have attracted audiences from different parts of Africa and internationally.

Okonda’s influence extended into public life when he ventured into politics during the 2007 General Election period, seeking an elective seat in Embakasi East on ODM ticket as he attempted to translate his leadership experience into public service.

Although his political ambitions did not culminate in electoral victory, the move reflected his desire to contribute to national development beyond the boardroom.

His political journey further elevated his public profile and reinforced his image as a leader committed to youth empowerment and economic transformation.

Over the years, Okonda’s achievements have earned him recognition in leadership and youth development circles.

He has been associated with initiatives aimed at mentoring young entrepreneurs, promoting peace, and encouraging self-reliance among Kenyan youth.

To his supporters, he is more than a businessman, he is a mentor who transformed ordinary school leavers into confident sales professionals and entrepreneurs.

His legacy is deeply rooted in the belief that success is not determined by academic qualifications alone but by attitude, discipline, perseverance, and the willingness to seize opportunities.

Through DS Max and his mentorship initiatives, he helped redefine the sales profession in Kenya and inspired countless young people to pursue excellence in business and life.
