Police in Tigania East,Meru County have launched investigations into a suspected murder incident after a one week old infant was found dead following a paternal domestic dispute between the child’s parents.
The incident occured in Athambu Village, Antuanuu Sublocation.
According to a report recorded at Muthara Police Station yesterday, the incident was reported by Assistant Chief Henry Gitle, who alerted police about the suspicious death of the infant.
Police officers from Muthara Police Station, accompanied by their DCI colleagues visited the family’s home and established that a dispute had erupted at about 2:00 a.m between Eliud Kalunge and his wife, Joy Kendi, over the paternity of their one week old daughter, identified as Nelly Mwende.
Investigators were informed that during the altercation, Kalunge allegedly assaulted Kendi several times using a stick.
At around 6:00 a.m.,Kendi reportedly escaped to her father’s home, leaving the infant behind.
When family members later returned to the house, they found the infant’s lifeless body, while Kalunge had disappeared and remains at large.
Crime scene investigators (CSI) processed the scene before the child’s body was moved to the mortuary at Meru Level 5 Hospital for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
