Police in Meru County have arrested a suspected fraudster accused of obtaining over Sh 7.5 million from a retired teacher through an alleged fake gold investment scheme.
The complainant, Grace Kinya Kiruki,aged 61 and a retired civil servant formerly employed by the Teachers Service Commission, reported that one Denis Kinoti allegedly conned her Sh 7,595,309 through bank and M-Pesa transactions conducted between February and April 2026.
The suspect reportedly convinced the complainant that he was involved in a lucrative gold business deal and promised to double her investment once the transaction materialized.
Police said the victim was later introduced to another suspect identified as Erick Gikundi, who allegedly posed as an employee of the Central Bank of Kenya and claimed he would facilitate smooth processing of payments linked to the purported gold business.
Following investigations launched by detectives from DCI Imenti North, officers led by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) yesterdat tracked down and arrested the main suspect who had reportedly gone into hiding to evade arrest.
Detectives apprehended him at his hideout in the Gakurine area within Meru County.
Police later escorted the suspect to his residence where a search was conducted.
During the operation, detectives recovered a grey Volkswagen Passat registration number KCS 611N, believed to have been acquired using proceeds of crime.
The vehicle was towed to Meru Police Station and booked before being detained at the station yard pending further investigations.
A Safaricom SIM card was also recovered during the search.
Police said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the second suspect believed to have participated in the fraudulent scheme.
The case remains under investigation by DCI Imenti North.
