Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has called for the removal of cabinet secretaries who are linked to drug trafficking.
Dr. Khalwale said drugs were the main cause of unrest in secondary schools.
He said the government should target its senior officials who are said to be behind drug peddling rackets.
He said drugs such as cannabis sativa, heroine and cocaine were finding their way to schools through teachers, non-teaching staff and students.
“These substances are eventually abused by learners who then become unruly and cause destruction in the institutions,”he said
The senator blamed poor parenting on the cause of truancy amongst the younger generation.
He said after being sent home following the unrest, some of the students had also become thorns in the flesh of their parents, guardians and the general public.
‘I am told one of the children here in Ikolomani had threatened to set their house ablaze if he was not served with meat. He had written on their family house ‘No Meat No House’. What kind of nonsense is this?!” he posed.
Khalwale said a Bill he has drafted seeking to re-introduce corporal punishment in schools was well on course.
He said the piece of legislation will restore sanity in schools once enacted.
He urged President William Ruto to take stern action against government officials whose names have surfaced in connection with the drug trade.
He emphasized that those holding public offices should be individuals of impeccable integrity, as government officials serve as role models for the youth and society as a whole.
He voiced his concern that allegations of senior leaders being involved in drug trafficking send a troubling message to young people, contributing to moral decline and unrest in schools.
He urged the President to dismiss any CSs and other officials found to have connections to drug trafficking and to appoint leaders with clean records, credibility, and genuine commitment to serving the nation with honesty.
Khalwale was speaking at Shisalachi village in Ikolomani, Kakamega County during a funeral ceremony for the late Mzee Joseph Indeche.
